Description |

Sometimes bridges are just bridges. Nothing particularly interesting about who made them or about their construction or design. The bridge across the River Dore at Vowchurch in the Golden Valley seems to be just that. A non-descript 19th century bridge made from sandstone.

The Dore which rises in the hills of the Black Mountains and descends to join the River Monnow can be fearsome in periods of heavy rainfall but in spring afternoons or moderate summer days, it passes by all other in joyful splendour. The bridge encompasses all of that. A bridge which sees all seasons and sees all levels of water. It sees the rise and fall of life.

The other delight of this bridge is of course the connections to the other side. The possibilities of walks and wanders. Of quiet and picturesque. Of fields and beauty. Of water voles. Of river life.

So why not? Sometimes a bridge is just for crossing.

But for more interesting diversions, head inside the church nearby for a link to Alice in Wonderland...
