"...the local identity of this Herefordshire market town..."

Description |

Ledbury is a pocket-sized marvel of independent shops embedded into a backdrop of the ‘old town’. Find the church of St Mary’s tucked behind the High Street in perfect crowded seclusion. Take a wander through the back streets where surprising black and white timbered buildings still exist, between cafes and pubs, between little artisan shops and residential addresses.

It explains why the people of Ledbury covet their town above all things. Don’t build a supermarket on the outside of town. Don’t drag shoppers from our High Street – the Homend, the Southend to the edge where they’ll just park and shop then leave. We want our High Street busy – from Bye Street to Church Street; we want individual commerce not ease and conformity. Leave us diversity richness and leave our High Street be.

It is understandable when Ledbury’s main street is standing out in front of you. The almshouses. The Feathers Hotel. The Elizabeth Barrett-Browning Institute aka the Clock Tower – the memorial to a long dead poet once of Ledbury - discover more here. The old Market House. The street-lined pubs, victuallers, the butchers.

Down side streets on left and right, quirks and intrigues. Signs of life. Sights of living. Once this place began the living of writer/poet John Masefield reflected now in the secondary school.

Circumnavigate the town on the slightly faded Town Trail which takes you around the edges, over bridges and down lanes, past the sleepy River Leadon, through residential backwaters.

Ledbury is the type of place where you could probably buy anything, you just needed to know which shop. This isn’t about picture perfect towns but functionality and Ledbury likes it just the way it is.
