Description |

Mortimer Forest was once a royal estate of woodland and hunting estates named for the infamous Norman and Medieval Mortimer family of this Marcher land on the Herefordshire/Shropshire Border. Their centres of power lay around Ludlow Castle and Wigmore Castle with vast swathes of countryside in this area under their feudal control and power.

But much of the current Mortimer forest owes its presence for a massive replanting effort done by the Forestry Commission in the 1920s after the First World War. When it was extensively logged for its massive hardwood trees in the years of the war between 1914 and 1918 for use in the war effort.

The cost of clearing the land for the planting of replacing the native hardwoods was ruled prohibitively expensive after the First World War and so conifers were to planted to meet the demand for timber in Britain which were quicker growing and met the need for softwood.

The current Forest has plenty of woodland trails to investigate which take visitors in loops and whirls around historical features and woodland sights. The long-distance walking trail the Mortimer Trail also ranges through this Forest heading to and from Ludlow on its edge. The High Vinnalls Marilyn sited within this woodland offers splendid views all around.
