Description |

The South West Coast Path runs its way along both sides of the south-west peninsula; taking in Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, Somerset...

For this section, Exmouth to Sidmouth awaits. This hike along the National Trail is about 12 miles but with sidetracks, distractions, and other things to drag you off the path - prepare for a couple more miles depending on stoppages. But life on a National Trail (the long-distance walks which criss-crosss Britain) becomes simple and just a case of following the wonderful acorn symbol which pops up from time to time to remind you that you're on the right path. But in fairness this path is easy to follow, just keep the sea to your right.

Beginning in Exmouth, you start with a river view that of the River Exe to keep you company but as you advance further, river becomes sea. There are some interesting asides along this path including Orcombe Point which is a needle sculpture made from local rock which overlooks the coast but highlights the western edge of the Jurassic coast. And for those who don't know, the Jurassic coast is a wonder for fossil hunters - big kids and little ones!

Onwards, heading eastwards takes you past Sandy Bay and onto Budleigh Salterton where a pleasant lunch is a wonderful thing after walking. And then on to Ladram Bay and Sidmouth.

But to be frank, this route, this path is just about the coast. The seaviews, the blue skies and blues seas when weather permits and of course, just you and your pack.

NB As our experiences can testify, bring plenty of water on those bluest of blue days - it can get hot out! So hats, sunscreen and refreshments at the ready.
